I have been visiting Greece my entire life (almost 30 years), and I fall in love with it more and more each time I go back.

There are certain places I find myself returning to again and again—and they’re the same ones I always recommend to anyone visiting for the first time.

Greece is one of the most diverse and beautiful countries in the world, filled with ancient history, stunning islands, and vibrant culture.

Whether you’re visiting for the first time or planning your next trip, these are ten must-see places that truly capture the magic of Greece.

This post is all about the top 10 places to visit in Greece.

Top 10 Places to Visit in Greece

1. Athens

The capital of Greece and one of the most recognizable cities in the world, Athens is where ancient history meets modern life.

The city is home to the iconic Acropolis of Athens and the Parthenon, offering breathtaking views and a deep connection to the past. At the same time, it’s a lively, bustling city full of culture, food, and energy.

Even if history was your least favorite subject in school, Athens is a place everyone should experience at least once. If you’re short on time, you can even see the highlights in just 24 hours (check out this blog post to learn how).

Aside from visiting the Acropolis, my favorite thing to do is wander through the winding streets of Plaka and Monastiraki, getting a little lost along the way.

And nothing beats ending the day at a rooftop bar or restaurant with a view of the Acropolis lit up at night—it never gets old.

2. Olympia

Located in the Peloponnese, Olympia is where the Olympic Games began. Originally, only Greek athletes competed, but over time it evolved into the global event we know today.

Now, visitors can explore the ancient ruins and even run on the original Olympic track—an unforgettable experience where you’re quite literally running in the footsteps of the first athletes.

I’ve only visited in the summer, and it gets very hot, so definitely bring sunscreen. That said, it’s one of my favorite ancient sites in Greece because of how relevant it still feels today.

The museum is also worth visiting—it’s the perfect place to cool off after walking through the ruins in the sun.

3. Crete

Crete is the largest island in Greece and truly has something for everyone. From stunning beaches to mountains and historic sites, it’s a destination you could explore for weeks.

It’s perfect for travelers who like variety—you can relax one day, explore villages the next, and hike or beach-hop after that.

I’ve only been once and feel like I barely scratched the surface, which just makes me want to go back even more.

4. Lefkada

Lefkada is unique because it’s connected to the mainland by a floating bridge, meaning you can actually drive there—no ferry required. Driving onto the island feels like a different experience compared to other Greek islands, but just as rewarding.

The island is known for its dramatic cliffs and some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. Keep in mind that the most famous beaches are also the most crowded, especially in peak season.

5. Zakynthos

Zakynthos is best known for Navagio Beach, one of the most photographed beaches in the world.

While it’s a popular (and sometimes pricey) destination, it’s absolutely worth seeing at least once.

The best way to explore the island is by boat—honestly, that’s my favorite way to explore any Greek island. It’s especially worth it here, since a boat tour is the only way to actually get down to Navagio Beach unless you’re just viewing it from above.

6. Kefalonia

Kefalonia is a hidden gem and my personal favorite island in Greece. It has everything—crystal-clear water, caves, mountains—but without the overwhelming crowds you’ll find on other islands.

What I love most is that even with iconic spots like Myrtos Beach and Assos, it still feels like real Greece. It hasn’t lost that local, authentic atmosphere, which makes it even more special.

7. Corfu

Known as Kerkyra in Greek, Corfu has a completely unique feel thanks to its strong Italian influence in both culture and architecture.

This island is also special to me personally—it’s where my great-grandmother is from.

Located in the far north, Corfu is so close to Albania that you can actually see it on a clear day, which adds to how distinct it feels compared to other Greek islands.

8. Aegina

Just a 45-minute ferry ride from Athens, Aegina is the perfect quick island escape. It’s ideal for travelers who want a taste of island life without committing to a longer trip.

Even if you’re not sure you’re an “island person,” Aegina is a great introduction—easy, convenient, and still full of charm.

9. Delphi

Delphi is one of the most iconic archaeological sites in Greece. Once considered the center of the world in ancient mythology, it combines incredible history with stunning mountain views.

On a clear day, you can even see a small sliver of the ocean in the distance. Nearby, the town of Arachova is also worth exploring.

This is one of the few places I’ve visited in different seasons (spring and fall), and both were amazing. No matter when you go, just be prepared—since it’s built into a mountainside, there’s quite a bit of walking and climbing involved.

10. Nafplio

Nafplio is a charming seaside town surrounded by historic fortresses. With its colorful streets, waterfront views, and romantic atmosphere, it’s easily one of the most beautiful towns in Greece.

The town is full of narrow alleyways (what I always call “hallways”) that feel picturesque from every angle. The vibe is mostly romantic and relaxed, with just enough liveliness in the evenings.

One of the coolest things to do here is explore the fortresses—two sit high on the mountainside, and another is located right in the middle of the bay, which you can reach by boat.

Final Thoughts

If I had to recommend just one place on this list, it would be Athens. It has the most iconic landmarks of ancient Greece, but also offers a modern, authentic Greek experience all in one place. The combination of old and new, all within such close proximity, makes it completely unique.
