These aren’t just “traditional dishes” you’ll find once a year—they’re everyday meals, weeknight staples, and Sunday lunch classics across Greece.

Here are some of the most common Greek main dishes you’ll see served at home and in local tavernas.

Greek Chicken and Potatoes (Kotopoulo me Patates)

A true Greek staple. My great aunt used to make this for us every single Monday when we were living in Greece, always for mesimeriano—the Greek lunch that’s treated as the most important meal of the day.

This dish is deceptively simple: chicken and potatoes baked together in the oven with olive oil, salt, and dried oregano, then finished with plenty of fresh lemon juice. The potatoes absorb all the pan juices and become soft on the inside with crispy edges. 

It’s comforting, reliable, and unmistakably Greek.

Fakes (Lentil Soup)

Fakes is a humble but essential Greek meal, especially during fasting periods. It’s a simple lentil soup made with onion, garlic, olive oil, and herbs.

Despite its simplicity, it’s incredibly filling and comforting. Many Greeks grow up eating this regularly during the week, especially in colder months.

Avgolemono (Chicken Lemon Soup)

Think of this as the Greek version of chicken noodle soup.

Avgolemono is made with chicken broth thickened using egg and fresh lemon juice, giving it a creamy texture without any cream. Orzo is usually added in place of noodles. 

It’s commonly eaten when you’re sick, tired, or just craving something warm and soothing.

Pita Gyro

Often just called a gyro, this is Greece’s most iconic street food. The name comes from the rotating vertical spit where the meat cooks (gyro means “turning”).

A classic pita gyro is wrapped in warm pita bread and filled with shaved pork or chicken, tzatziki (a yogurt and cucumber sauce), tomatoes, onions, and French fries tucked right inside. 

It’s fast, filling, and something locals eat regularly—not just tourists.

Brizola (Pork Chops)

Brizola refers to grilled pork chops, typically seasoned simply and cooked fresh to order.

They’re usually served with fries, lemon, and sometimes a simple salad. This is a classic taverna main—straightforward, hearty, and very common.

Keftedes (Meatballs)

One of my personal favorites. Greek meatballs are small, well-seasoned, and lightly fried.

They’re often served smothered in tomato sauce and placed on top of rice, though you’ll also see them served plain with lemon or as part of a larger spread. 

They’re comforting, flavorful, and always a crowd-pleaser.

Souvlaki

Souvlaki is a simple kebab made of marinated meat, usually pork or chicken, grilled on a skewer. It can be served plain with lemon and salt, or wrapped in pita with fries and sauce.

While it’s sometimes confused with gyro, Greeks treat them as very different foods. Souvlaki is lighter, chunkier, and often eaten as an easy lunch or dinner.

Gemista

Gemista are vegetables—most commonly peppers and tomatoes—stuffed with rice, herbs, and olive oil. They can be completely vegetarian or include ground meat.

This is a very seasonal dish, often made in the summer when vegetables are at their best. 

It’s usually baked alongside potatoes that soak up all the flavorful juices from the pan.

Pastitsio

I usually describe pastitsio as Greek lasagna—it’s the closest comparison for those unfamiliar with it.

It’s a baked dish made with layers of pasta, a spiced ground beef sauce (often with cinnamon or allspice), and a thick béchamel topping. You’ll commonly see it served in square slices at family lunches and gatherings.

Moussaka

Similar in spirit to pastitsio, moussaka is another beloved baked, layered dish. Instead of pasta, it uses eggplant as the base layer, followed by ground meat and a creamy béchamel topping.

It’s rich, filling, and typically served in square pieces. This is one of those dishes that feels celebratory, even when it’s just a regular Sunday lunch.
