All About The Acropolis Museum
If you plan to visit Athens, Greece, you should also plan to visit the Acropolis Museum. It houses all of the artifacts that have been found at the Acropolis.
While the Acropolis itself is quite impressive given how old it is, a visit to the museum really helps you picture what it was like when it was first built thousands of years ago.
This post is all about The Acropolis Museum.
Basic History
The Acropolis Museum houses the findings from the archeological Acropolis of Athens, Greece and opened in June 2009.
The museum was built on other ancient Greek archeological site which was preserved and serves as the basement floor of the museum. There are even plexiglass panels in the entrance floor so you can see the site below your feet (see the photo below).
Best Time To Visit And How Long To Visit
The best time to visit the museum is the middle of the day so you can take advantage of being in the cool A/C building during the time the sun is the hottest.
If you plan to visit the Acropolis as well, I recommend you start at the Acropolis in the morning and then visit the museum after.
You could theoretically spend all day in the Museum because it hold so many artifacts but most people typically spend 2-3 hours visiting.

What To Bring
Your camera to document your visit (just please be sure to read the signage about what you can and can’t photograph).
Regardless, you are definitely going to need to make sure the flash mode is turned off because that isn’t allowed at all.
In addition (or instead of) a camera you can bring a notebook/sketchbook to document your visit.
While this may seem a little bit old school, it can actually be a lot of fun. When my parents pulled us out of school to visit Northern Greece, they gave my siblings and I notebooks and had us document what we learned at the various museums we visited.
You can also bring a water bottle for before and after the museum visit because no food or drink is actually allowed in the museum.
What To Wear
For your visit be sure to wear comfy shoes as you will be on your feet for almost the entire duration of your visit.
If you need a place to rest, the upper floor has a documentary video on display and chairs to sit and watch it. There is also a bench on the edge of the display area of the top floor that also has a gogeous view of the Acropolis.
Also be sure to bring a light sweater in case the A/C is too cold (especially after a sweaty summer day outside you can get colder easily because you are covered in sweat).
Tickets/Tours
According to the museum’s website, you can only buy your tickets exclusively from the museum for the museum. However, I have had no issues buying multi-site passes to both the Museum and the Acropolis like this one.
Also the museum offers audio tours. You can use your personal smartphone to scan the QR code and get the app that has the audio guides. Note that you also have to bring your own headphones.
