All About The Acropolis Museum
If you plan to visit Athens, Greece, you should also plan to visit the Acropolis Museum. It houses all of the artifacts that have been found at the Acropolis.
While the Acropolis itself is quite impressive given how old it is, a visit to the museum really helps you picture what it was like when it was first built thousands of years ago.
This post is all about The Acropolis Museum.
Basic History
The Acropolis Museum houses the findings from the archeological Acropolis of Athens, Greece, and it opened in June 2009.
Additionally, the museum was built on another ancient Greek archeological site, which was preserved and now serves as the basement floor of the museum. A unique feature of the museum are the plexiglass panels in the entrance floor, allowing you to see the site below your feet (see the photo below).
Best Time To Visit And How Long To Visit
The best time to visit the museum is the middle of the day so you can take advantage of being in the cool A/C building during the time the sun is the hottest.
If you plan to visit the Acropolis as well, I recommend you start at the Acropolis in the morning and then visit the museum after.
You could theoretically spend all day in the Museum because it hold so many artifacts but most people typically spend 2-3 hours visiting.

Skip the overwhelm — I pulled together the must-knows so you don’t have to dig through a million sites.
What To Bring
Bring your camera to document your visit, but please read the signage about what you can and can’t photograph.
Make sure to turn off the flash mode, as flash photography isn’t allowed at all.
In addition to (or instead of) a camera, bring a notebook or sketchbook to document your visit.
While this may seem a bit old school, it can actually be a lot of fun. When my parents took us out of school to visit Northern Greece, they gave my siblings and me notebooks to document what we learned at the various museums we visited.
Also, bring a water bottle for before and after the museum visit, since no food or drink is allowed inside the museum.
What To Wear
For your visit, be sure to wear comfy shoes since you will be on your feet for almost the entire duration of your stay.
Additionally, if you need a place to rest, head to the upper floor where you can watch a documentary video and sit in the provided chairs. Moreover, there is a bench on the edge of the display area on the top floor that offers a gorgeous view of the Acropolis.
Lastly, be sure to bring a light sweater in case the A/C feels too cold. Especially after a sweaty summer day outside, you can get colder easily because of the sweat on your skin.
Tickets/Tours
The museum’s website states that you can only purchase your tickets exclusively from the museum. However, I have had no issues purchasing multi-site passes to both the Museum and the Acropolis like this one.
Additionally, the museum provides audio tours. You can use your personal smartphone to scan the QR code and download the app that offers the audio guides. Remember to bring your own headphones as well.
